What Is Sleep Apnea? What is an Auto CPAP Machine (APAP)?

Sleep apnea is a potentially life threatening disorder that is said to affect nearly 30% of the U.S. adult population. Research shows that untreated sleep apnea can lead to heart failure, stroke, hypertension and diabetes. The most successful therapy for sleep apnea is CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure), a medical device that blows air through a nasal or full face CPAP mask and stabilizes the airway to prevent closure.

CPAP machines come in a variety of therapy modes. A CPAP Machine traditionally generates a fixed pressure of flow (i.e. 10 cm/h2O) while other devices like Auto CPAP (APAP) or Bi-Level or BiPAP Machines Bi-Level (BiPAP) use variable pressures to treat sleep apnea. These therapy modes are typically established in the sleep lab or by a physician. The mask plays an important role in tolerance, compliance and effectiveness of the therapy.
